Aging parents and older adults

Nobody agreed you would be the one holding it all.

It happened because you live nearest, or you answered first, and now the appointments, the transport, the meals and the follow-ups all sit in your head. Family Observatory takes them out of it.

An older couple garden together in their own backyard.

What usually goes wrong

None of it happens because a family stopped caring.

The appointment nobody claimed

It goes in the calendar on Tuesday. On Thursday morning three people discover that none of them were driving.

Siblings on different schedules

One works shifts, one is two time zones away, one has small children. Working out who is actually free means a round of texts nobody wants to send.

The follow-up that evaporates

The doctor says book a follow-up in six weeks. Six weeks later, everyone assumes it was booked.

Your parent is tired of being asked

They want their independence, not a daily interrogation about whether they ate. Being coordinated around is very different from being checked up on.

What the Coordinator does with all this

You add the appointment. It works out that somebody has to drive, notices nobody has taken it, and looks at who is plausibly free without seeing anyone's calendar. It asks that one person. If they decline, it asks the next. If it stays unowned as Thursday approaches, it tells the family, and it says why.

Then it writes down what happened, so nobody has to reconstruct it later from memory and a group chat.

What it handles for an aging parent

  • Appointments, and who is taking them
  • Transport, including the return trip that always gets forgotten
  • Meals and groceries
  • Daily routines, when the family wants them confirmed
  • Family calls and visits, spread rather than clustered
  • Home tasks and repairs
  • Caregiver visits, and whether they happened
  • Follow-up items, which is where most things fall through

Your parent does not have to manage anything

They do not need an account, an app, or a habit. Arrangements get made around them and they are told what has been sorted. There are no cameras, no tracking, and nothing that reports on them to anyone.
