Frequently asked questions
Answers for families.

Product
Is Family Observatory a monitoring or medical service?
No. It's a simple family coordination service. It is not medical monitoring, not emergency dispatch, and it doesn't replace professional caregivers, medical-alert devices, or regular family contact.
Does Family Observatory use cameras?
No. There are no cameras and no microphones, and no passive home surveillance. Your parent is told what has been arranged, and that's the whole interaction.
Setup & the senior experience
Is it hard for an older adult to use?
No. There's one clear question and two large buttons. No accounts to manage, no menus, no swiping, and no time pressure. It works with larger text and screen readers.
How many responsibilities are there each day?
Up to four, at times you choose to fit your parent's routine. You can change them anytime.
What if my parent does not want to take part?
Then they do not, and the honest answer is that a Care Circle still works, just less well. Your parent controls their own participation and can pause or stop at any point without asking anyone. Nothing is arranged around them against their wishes, and nothing is reported about them that they have not chosen to send.
What still works without them is the family half: appointments, transport and responsibilities still have an owner, and the people helping still see the same picture. What stops working is confirmation, because the only thing your parent ever sends is their own answer. If that answer is the thing you are paying for, this is the wrong month to start.
What if the rest of my family will not use it?
This is the question that decides most of these purchases, and it is the one the design is actually built around: only the person who sets it up has to engage with the system. Everyone else receives a message asking whether they can take one specific thing, and answers it.
That is deliberate. A tool that requires five people to adopt a new habit before it does anything is a tool that fails in week three. How it works sets out the escalation in full, and when siblings disagree covers the part no product fixes.
Can my parent see what the family says about them?
Your parent's side is what has been arranged that concerns them, and that is all of it. They are not shown the Care Circle's coordination view, and there is nothing about them in it to read: the shared picture holds arrangements, not observations about a person.
That is a dignity decision before it is a privacy one. A family that believes their parent is reading the coordination will coordinate less honestly, and a parent who suspects they are being discussed will engage less. Both are worse outcomes than the awkwardness the separation avoids.
Notifications & unowned responsibilities
What happens if my parent misses a request?
A gentle reminder is sent after a delay you choose. If the request is still missed, the family contacts you set up are notified so a real person can follow up.
Can more than one family member get updates?
Yes. Multiple family members can share one view, so no one is left guessing and no single person carries it alone.
What if I am the one who is unavailable?
The Coordinator asks somebody else. It works out who is plausibly free without seeing anyone's calendar, asks that person, and if nobody accepts it tells the Care Circle with the reason rather than assuming.
It never assigns anything to somebody who did not accept it. An arrangement nobody agreed to is the failure this exists to stop, not a state it is willing to create to keep a board looking tidy.
Do you contact my parent's doctor, pharmacy or care agency?
No. Nothing is shared outside the family members and caregivers you invite. We do not speak to clinicians on your behalf, do not request records, and do not appear in any conversation with a provider unless one of your people puts us there.
Where a paid carer is part of the arrangement, they can be invited to the Care Circle like anyone else, which is a decision you make rather than a connection we form. Working with paid carers covers that seam.
Privacy, pricing & emergencies
Do you sell or share our information?
No. We never sell personal information, and we don't share it beyond the family members you invite. See Safety & Privacy.
How much does it cost?
Membership is $100 per month per Care Circle. That covers one Care Circle with up to two supported people, and unlimited family members and caregivers at no extra cost. Starting begins with a short setup conversation, and no payment is taken until we have confirmed your situation and start date. See Membership.
What should we do in an emergency?
Call 911 or your local emergency number. Family Observatory is not an emergency service, cannot detect a fall or medical event, and does not contact emergency services on your behalf.
Is $100 a month worth it if we only have a few things each month?
Possibly not, and it is worth working out before you pay rather than in month four. The value is not in the volume of arrangements, it is in the ones nobody picked up. A family with two appointments a month and one obvious person to handle both is not losing anything to a coordination gap, and a membership will not find one.
The families this is built for have several people involved, at least one at a distance, and a recurring sense that something got missed and nobody can say when. If that does not describe yours, when coordination is not the problem is the more useful page, and it was written by the company selling this. What else families try goes through the six alternatives and names the two that beat us.
What if there are two parents, or more than two people to support?
One Care Circle covers up to two supported people, which is the common case of two parents in one household. Beyond two it is a second Care Circle, and the reason is practical rather than commercial: the picture stops being readable when it is holding three separate sets of arrangements, and an unreadable shared view is the failure mode of every tool in this category.
Family members and approved caregivers are unlimited and included either way. The membership is priced per Care Circle, never per person helping.
Can we cancel, and what happens if we do?
Cancel any month. There is a 30-day money-back guarantee, and canceling stops the next payment rather than starting a retention conversation.
What happens to your family's record after you cancel is set out in the privacy policy, which is still in legal review and marked as a draft on this site. We would rather say that plainly than publish a commitment we have not finished checking. See Safety & Privacy.
Is Family Observatory HIPAA compliant?
We make no compliance claim, and you should treat any coordination product that does with some care. HIPAA governs covered entities such as providers, health plans and their business associates. A family coordinating its own arrangements is not one, and a service that helps them do it does not become one by saying so on a page.
The more useful answer is what we actually hold: arrangements, and your parent's own yes or no. We do not ask for medical details to sign up, and we ask you not to send them. That is a narrower promise than a compliance badge and it is one we can keep.
Important: this is not a medical or emergency service
Family Observatory is a family coordination service. It is not a medical device, does not provide medical advice, and is not a monitoring, emergency, or medical-alert service.
Family Observatory does not contact emergency services and cannot detect a fall, a medical event, or an emergency. In an emergency, call 911 or your local emergency number.
It does not replace professional caregivers, medical care, medical-alert devices, or regular contact with your family member. You remain responsible for your family's care and escalation decisions.
